George Russell is on pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix this evening, ahead of Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri .
Russell snatched top spot in Montreal for Mercedes by beating Verstappen by 0.160 seconds to secure the fastest time in qualifying.
Lando Norris could manage only seventh place and starts behind Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton, and Fernando Alonso.
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve plays host to the 10th race of an enthralling Formula 1 season. F1 The campaign so far has seen an intriguing title battle develop between McLaren teammates Piastri and Norris.
Piastri had won three races in a row to increase his world championship lead in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Miami, only for Norris triumphs in style in Monaco to follow Verstappen’s impressive victory at Imola .
The Australian was back on top at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona a fortnight ago, however, leading Norris to a McLaren one-two push his advantage in the standings back out to 10 points with 15 races still to go this term.
A dramatic afternoon at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was most notable for Verstappen's controversial clash with Russell that earned him a 10-second penalty and demoted him from fifth to 10th on the grid.
The reigning four-time world champion, who is 49 points behind leader Piastri in the title race, is now just one more penalty point away from an automatic one-race suspension and will hope to avoid any more punishment in Canada, where he has won the last three races in succession.

The first practice session took place on Friday evening as Verstappen set the early pace and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out, with a second following later that night.
Russell then pipped Verstappen to pole in qualifying on Saturday night, following FP3.
As noted, the race itself gets underway at 7pm BST on Sunday night.
