The Australian, a one-time major winner from the 2015 PGA Championship, declared his support for the Browns while playing at the Pennsylvania course, Oakmont. His allegiances stemmed from his residence in Cleveland, Ohio.

Day, who made the cut for the final day of U.S. Open action after ingeniously turning his fortunes around by opting to stomp on his putter , wearing a yellow Dewalt bag to carry his clubs. "No, unfortunately not," Day said when asked if he was paying tribute to the Steelers, who recently signed avid golfer Aaron Rodgers , with his bag.

I do like Pittsburgh sports in general, even though I do live in Columbus, Ohio and my favorite football group is the Cleveland Browns. Even though they have a rivalry, my second favorite team is Pittsburgh.

"I know I am going to get a lot of slack for that. But yeah I do have the Pittsburgh colors on today, I'll leave it at that."

"One fan joked, 'Gotta be close to an unforgivable offense...'" U.S. golf fans' confusion stems from the Steelers and Browns' longstanding rivalry.

The Browns-Steelers rivalry dates back to the AAFC-NFL merger in 1950, which placed the teams in the same conference, meaning they play each other at least twice a season.

There's no love lost between the two NFL franchises, but Day's declaration of love for Pittsburgh sports and the Browns is too much for some.

"Jason Day is a Cleveland Browns fan. Who says the Steelers are his 2nd favorite team? This is not possible. You can't root for both. One of the worst fan takes of all-time," another tweeted.

It's not only Steelers fans who are upset with Day. Some have even suggested that he should not be welcomed back to Ohio after stating that the Steelers are his second team. "I don't think Jason Day is allowed back in Ohio," a fan declared.

"Jason Day just said his favorite NFL team is the Cleveland Browns. Already weird enough, until he then said his second favorite team is the Pittsburgh Steelers," a fourth said.

Day is unlikely to climb himself into major contention at Oakmont on Sunday. He's tied for 21st and several shots behind Sam Burns and joint-second J.J. Spaun and compatriot Adam Scott. It was Day's decision to step on his putter that improved his short game and allowed him to make the cut for Sunday.

I bent my putter. Yeah, no, I just manually bent it myself," Day told reporters after his second round. "I stood on it. That's kind of how I used to do it back in the day.

"It just hadn't been looking very good to me personally, kind of looks a little bit hooded, the grip's on a little bit closed too, so that's not a positive for me. But I bent it enough to make it look more open, which is good."
