Rory McIlroy throws his club and smashes the tee marker as he barely makes the cut at Oakmont

Rory McIlroy’s temper boiled over into the ugly here at the 125th US Open on Friday evening as he first hurled his club 30 yards and then, five holes later, violently smashed up a tee marker. It is fair to say that the Northern Irishman’s euphoria after completing the career grand slam two months ago has been well and truly drained.

Oakmont can do that to a player. Shane Lowry, McIlroy’s playing partner, was so exasperated by the experience that on his way to a 78 and a 17-over total - and needless to say, a missed cut - he forgot to mark his ball on the green. Lowry knew it was a penalty shot, but did not care and laughed. There was absolutely no mirth from his countryman.

On the par-five 12th, McIlroy pushed his second shot and so the driving iron flew after his ball, the world No. 2’s face flushing in anger. On the drivable 17th, he pulled it and took out his fury on the marker that was destroyed in the process. It was hardly an edifying sight but at least served to sum up his frustration.

His 72 saw him finish on six-over to scrape into the weekend. It was actually a gutsy effort by McIlroy, particularly after he double-bogeyed two of the first three holes. He played the last 15 holes in two-under. But this second round will be recalled for his tantrums and for the fact that for the sixth consecutive major day, he refused to talk to the press. Certainly, an apology for his antics should have been forthcoming.

In fairness, he was not the only player in turmoil. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau was disgusted after his 77 left him on 10-over and missing the cut. Yet perhaps, there is no more accurate gauge of how difficult this challenge happens to be than at Oakmont, which so nearly claimed Scottie Scheffler as a victim. There were moments when it seemed as if the world No. 1 was destined to miss his first cut in three years.

It would have been a huge shock if Scheffler had exited these gates prematurely. The Texan came here not only on the back of three victories in his last four starts, including last month’s US PGA Championship.

He began this tournament as the 11/4 favorite, the lowest price since the days of Tiger Woods in his prime. Yet, on his 11th hole, he was five-over after three bogeys in five holes and apparently headed to the Delta check-in desk. Unthinkable.

But Scheffler dug deep and, having started on the 10th, played the more difficult front nine in level par to advance into the weekend on four-over. "I battled really hard," he said. "It’s incredibly challenging out there. I felt like me getting away with one-over today wasn’t all that bad. It could have been a lot worse."

Who knows, this 71 could even have presented Scheffler with an opportunity to win his second major in succession and head to Royal Portrush on the hunt for the Claret Jug that would see him complete the career grand slam. "I don’t think by any means I’m out of the tournament,” he said. “At the US Open I don’t think you’re ever out of the tournament.”

Nothing appears certain on a layout that continues to confound. Listening to Jon Rahm after his 75 left him on the same mark as Scheffler was to hear a golfer at his wit’s end. “I didn’t make a putt, that was the main difference [to his first-round 69],” the Spaniard said.

I didn’t play badly. I played quite well. But I didn’t see anything go in besides a seven-footer on the seventh. That’s it. That’s a very hard thing to deal with when trying to shoot a score out here. Honestly, I’m too annoyed and too mad right now to think about any perspective. Very frustrated. Very few rounds of golf I’ve played in my life where I think I hit good putts and they didn’t sniff the hole, so it’s frustrating.

Oakmont had clearly gotten under his skin, and there was a definite sense that the US Golf Association, the governing body that organizes this annual test of skill and temperament, had burrowed its way into Rahm’s head as well. The pin positions were decidedly cruel on some holes to the point of being unfair.

These are the toughest greens in the world and with slopes of these inclines, there is no need to have them so quick or to place the pins on top of mounds. Except nobody was daring to say it. Not after Sam Burns, the US Ryder Cup player, had shown what was possible with a stunning 65. It handed Burns, Scheffler’s closest ally on Tour, the clubhouse lead on three-under, and was compiled largely courtesy of a hot flat-stick.

The 28-year-old is a five-time winner on the PGA Tour and is regarded as one of the best putters on the circuit. The 22-footer for par on the 18th was merely the latest evidence for this reputation. It was a big breaker of a putt and ensured that there was only one bogey on his scorecard - on the very first hole - compared to six birdies.

Burns converted all 16 of his putts inside 10 feet, and in two rounds he has made 11 birdies, a ridiculous figure considering the fact that Dustin Johnson carded the same number of red circles on his way to the 2016 title here.

There are only two other players under par; overnight leader JJ Spaun on two-under after a 72 and Norwegian Viktor Hovland on one-under after a 68. Hovland’s blue-and-gold teammate Tyrrell Hatton fired a solid 70 to stand on three-over, while Frenchman Victor Perez celebrated a hole-in-one on the sixth in his own 70 that left him on one-over. Oakmont does allow the occasional cheer.

12:32 AM BST

Mickelson misses the cut

The 54-year-old fails to make his birdie putt as it slips by and ends up leaving him at eight over, so he will miss the cut. He still needs the US Open trophy to complete the career Grand Slam, and it looks increasingly unlikely that he will achieve this at the age of 54.

12:14 AM BST

Former champion going home

2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark finishes up on eight over and that will not be enough to make the weekend.

12:07 AM BST

Rain falling

The weather has been threatening for a while, and finally, the rain starts coming down, and quite hard. It may well soften the greens a touch.

Fitzpatrick has birdied his final hole to end up on seven over and he will be hoping that is enough.

12:06 AM BST

Adam Scott, who is at even par, speaking to Sky Sports

Chasing the never-ending dream of winning another major. I have tried to keep my game at a high level for a long time and luckily my body has held up.

I think the desire to win another major is growing even more if it is possible. These next two days, I do not know how many more there will be, but I just want to make the most of it.

12:01 AM BST

Birdie for McIlroy

A well-executed approach shot hits the downslope and rolls to within about five feet of the hole. He sinks the putt for a birdie, earning loud cheers, and will make the cut at six over par.

11:55 PM BST

At the 18th

A crucial few shots are coming up for McIlroy, and he starts with his first shot on the 18th, finding the fairway.

There are now just three players under par; Burns, Spaun and Hovland.

11:53 PM BST

The defending champion packing his bags

DeChambeau will not make the weekend as he finishes up at ten over.

Schauffele scrapes through to the weekend at six over.

11:51 PM BST

J.J. Spaun's thoughts

There was a little stress, but not as stressful as today. I am glad to keep it together and have a good shot going into the weekend. My game has been in good shape all year, I have been trying to lean on the experiences I have had all year.

There is still a long way to go, 36 holes, I am just super happy to be in contention. The Players was a great experience and something to build off.

11:49 PM BST

Missed opportunity

McIlroy has about 12 feet for the birdie but he cannot sink the putt so remains at seven over going to the last. Huge pressure on McIlroy heading to 18.

Meanwhile Lawrence is going backwards. He was on fire at the start of his round but the wheels are falling off. A double bogey on the par-five fourth drops him to one over.

11:44 PM BST

Chance of a birdie

McIlroy's bunker shot is pretty decent and gives him a good chance at a birdie, which would give him a bit more comfort heading into the final hole.

One man who is set to miss the cut is Aberg, who has finished up on eight over.

11:37 PM BST

Smashing the tee box

More frustration from McIlroy, who is not happy out there. He has already hurled his club earlier in the round and now smashes the tee marker after his driver on the 17th leaks to the right and into the bunker.

11:34 PM BST

Bogey at the last

That is unfortunate for the man who led after the first round. That bounce off his second shot proves costly as he bogeys the 18th and ends up with a two-over round of 72. He hits the halfway stage of the US Open at two under, one off Burns.

Meanwhile Detry has had a horror couple of holes. A double bogey at the fifth is followed up by another at the sixth, which has seen him drop from three under to one over. In that latest double bogey it included accidentally tapping his ball while lining up his shot in the rough fringe beside the green.

11:27 PM BST

Par for McIlroy

A fairly safe and comfortable par for the Northern Irishman and he is set to just make the cut with two holes to play. He will head to the 17th which, with a good drive, could present a birdie or even eagle opportunity.

11:26 PM BST

Spaun to miss a putt at the last?

Spaun has a horrible downhill putt to make par. It is just over 26 feet, and this is extremely difficult; if you hit it too softly, you'll still be left with a tough next putt. Hit it too firmly, and the ball will race past the hole.

He does an okay job but will still have a tricky little putt coming back.

11:23 PM BST

Lawrence's bogey

Dropped shots seemingly everywhere at the moment, and it is back-to-back bogeys on the second and third for Lawrence, who drops to one under.

11:22 PM BST

Double bogey for Detry

That will hurt the Belgian. He should not have been walking off the fifth (his 14th) with anything worse than a par yet he makes a double bogey after a four-putt. That drops him from three under to one under.

11:18 PM BST

On the 18th

Spaun found the fairway with his tee shot down the last but his second takes a horrible bounce off the green and runs off the back.

Meanwhile, it appears DeChambeau’s week is coming to an end. A bogey on the seventh (his 16th hole) drops him to ten over, and he will not be making the weekend.

11:09 PM BST

Big, big birdie

How crucial a moment will that be for McIlroy? A birdie on the 15th takes him to seven over and gives him a chance to make the weekend.

11:08 PM BST

New co-leaders

A birdie on the par-five fourth takes Detry to three under, joining Burns at that mark. Make that three co-leaders as Spaun birdies the 17th to also move to three under.

11:07 PM BST

Lawrence's bogey

In some ways he will probably walk off the second green a little relieved just to drop the one shot. Plenty of tough holes up ahead. Meanwhile on the fourth...

11:04 PM BST

Defending champion to miss the cut?

DeChambeau’s round is going from bad to worse and he is facing the tougher front nine at the moment. A bogey on the sixth drops him to nine over and he will need a miracle realistically to make the weekend.

11:02 PM BST

Trouble for Lawrence

I spoke about the difficulty of the second green and the pin position today. Lawrence’s tee shot was good but his second goes over the back and into the bunker. There is not much green to play with and his bunker shot does not make it onto the green, instead ending up in some thick rough.

10:52 PM BST

Missed opportunity

McIlroy can't capitalize on the birdie opportunity and remains at eight over with four holes left to play.

10:51 PM BST

Oh dear!

A brain fart from Lowry. He picks up his ball on the 14th green but does not put a marker down. He realizes his mistake almost immediately and chuckles, knowing he is not going to make the cut. One-shot penalty incoming.

10:48 PM BST

Birdie for Lawrence

That sublime second shot sets up the birdie and the South African takes it to join Burns on three under.

As he does that, Spaun bogeys the 16th and drops to two under.

10:46 PM BST

On the 14th

McIlroy nearly finds the green on the 368-yard par four and ends up in the bunker. His chip out is good and he has a chance for a birdie to move to seven over.

On the fifth, the defending champion DeChambeau registers a double bogey to drop to eight over alongside McIlroy.

10:41 PM BST

Stunning from Lawrence

What a way to start his second run of nine after a horror run. He finds the fairway off the tee on the first (his 10th hole) and then the second is fantastic, nearly holing out for eagle. You are not going to see many better shots than that today and it will be an almost certain birdie.

10:38 PM BST

Bryson in trouble?

DeChambeau has gone behind the back of the fifth green (his 14th hole of the round) and found the bunker. That is going to be a tough up-and-down for par and he is flirting with the cut line. That shot into the bunker was in fact his third shot having found the rough off the tee.

10:37 PM BST

Spaun loses outright lead

A bogey on the 15th drops Spaun back to three under, which means we have a tie at the top of the leaderboard with Burns in the clubhouse on three under after a sublime round of 65 earlier today.

10:33 PM BST

Close but no cigar

McIlroy’s tee shot on the par-three 13th puts him in a good position to get a birdie to move to seven over but it slides just by the left edge.

10:27 PM BST

Lawrence's bogey

This round started so well for the South African but has turned a little sour. A bogey on the 18th hole means he has now dropped four shots in his last five holes. He drops to two under, two off Spaun’s lead. He heads to the more difficult nine.

Meanwhile, McIlroy has saved par on the 12th and heads into the final third of his round still holding on.

10:23 PM BST

Trouble at the 18th

Having started at the tenth, Lawrence is approaching the turn and is in a spot of bother. His tee shot down 18 is perfect but his second finds the rough next to the green. The lie is very tough for his third shot and his chip goes a long way past the hole. He is going to have nearly 50 feet for par.

10:17 PM BST

Frustration boiling over

McIlroy doesn't look like he will make the weekend. His tee shot on the 12th is perfect, finding the fairway, but his second is poor, flying to the left and landing in some deep rough. He then throws his club in frustration, and he is looking quite dejected right now.

Meanwhile on the 14th Spaun is so, so close to a birdie that would have extended his lead to two but it goes around the hole.

10:15 PM BST

Projected cut

Here are some of the names who, as it stands, are not currently making the weekend; Aberg, McIlroy, Fitzpatrick, D Johnson, Rose, Thomas, Lowry. Some huge, huge names on that list and then there is the likes of Fleetwood and DeChambeau who are only just inside the cut right now.

10:08 PM BST

Why are the rounds taking so long?

10:07 PM BST

DeChambeau flirting with danger

The defending champion has made a bogey on the third (his 12th hole of the day) and has dropped back to six over, just above the cut line.

Lawrence nearly joins Spaun at four under, but his birdie putt slides past the right edge. Given where his tee shot ended up, he will likely take that par.

10:59 PM BST

Remarkable!

He is on a horror run and after a wayward drive, Lawrence must have had his heart in his mouth approaching that shot. He plays a sublime shot out of the thick rough and has an outside chance of a birdie.

9:55 PM BST

Huge challenge

We knew going into the week this was going to be tough and so it is proving. Just five players are under par; Spaun, Burns, Lawrence, Detry and Hovland.

Lawrence is on the 17th (his eighth hole of the round) and he tries to hit a fade with the driver but it starts too far left and ends up in some horrible rough.

9:52 PM BST

McIlroy is struggling

Just two holes after a birdie that put him on the projected cut line, a bogey for McIlroy on the 11th drops him back to eight over, which as it stands would not be enough to make the weekend. Plenty of work to do for him to make the weekend but the back nine is playing easier than the front nine.

9:48 PM BST

Terrible run for Lawrence

Things have changed at the top of the leaderboard quite dramatically over the last hour. Lawrence did lead by three not that long ago but he now has bogeys on 14, 15, and 16 to drop to three under, and Spaun now leads by one. The back nine is playing significantly easier than the front nine today and Lawrence is playing the back nine first. This course can bite you hard!

9:45 PM BST

Birdie for Detry

It has been an up-and-down first nine holes for the Belgian having started at the tenth but a birdie on the 9th hole takes him to the turn at two under, just two shots off our co-leaders Spaun and Lawrence.

9:42 PM BST

Bryson makes up a shot on the second.

The pin position at the second is so tough; birdies are tough to come by, but the defending champion gets one, which takes him to five under, a couple of holes past the turn.

9:30 PM BST

So close!

Another birdie opportunity for McIlroy on the 10th, but it passes agonizingly close to the hole. He remains at seven over.

9:27 PM BST

Important birdie for Tommy

I mentioned that Fleetwood is currently right on the cut line, but he sinks a crucial birdie on his second hole (which is his 11th hole overall), bringing him to seven over. He has been working recently with Butch Harmon in Las Vegas. A few more of those and he will be safely into the weekend.

9:25 PM BST

Lawrence loses outright lead

This course is tough to say the least and you can have momentum swings very quickly. Lawrence followed up three straight birdies with back-to-back bogeys and he drops back to four under so Spaun is now in a share of the lead.

9:22 PM BST

Range time done

Finally, nearly three hours after his second round finished, Scheffler decides it is time to head off the range. It's very strange to see him as animated as he was on the range.

9:19 PM BST

Projected cut

Currently stands at seven over, so McIlroy is right on the cusp at the moment. The likes of Fleetwood, Fitzpatrick and Cantlay are all just outside it but out on the course as we speak so still time to make a charge for the weekend.

9:17 PM BST

DeChambeau in trouble

The defending champion is in trouble on the first, having played the back nine first. He finds the bunker to the right of the fairway and his chip out does not go very far at all. He runs the ball up to the green with his third shot but it just keeps running and running and goes off the back of the green. He will almost certainly drop at least one shot.

9:11 PM BST

Lawrence's lead cut in half

10 minutes ago, the South African led by three shots. Now he leads by one after his bogey on the 14th and Spaun now birdies the 11th to move to four under.

9:10 PM BST

Finally a birdie!

It has been a tough round so far for McIlroy but he drains a long birdie putt on the ninth to move to seven over, right on the cut line currently.

9:08 PM BST

Lawrence drops shot

It was going swimmingly for the South African after three birdies in a row, but he drops his first shot of the day with a bogey on the 14th (his fifth hole of the day). His lead is down to two shots.

9:06 PM BST

Birdie for Scott

The Australian makes a birdie on the tenth to move to even par, in a tie for seventh. Scott is on this incredible run of consecutive majors played, which is nearing 100, and it is only Jack Nicklaus ahead of him.

08:57 PM BST

McIlroy saves par

If he has any hope of making the cut, those putts have to drop and he makes the par on the eighth. He stays at eight over, one behind the projected cut.

08:53 PM BST

Chance to increase lead

Lawrence has a birdie putt on the fourth to put two shots between him and Spaun, and he nails it. That birdie takes him to six under, and he is three under for the day.

Up ahead on the tenth, Spaun has a birdie to cut the lead back to one but he cannot take it. He leaves himself a tough, tricky little par putt and it slides past the left edge. He drops back to three under and in the space of a few minutes Lawrence’s lead goes from one to three.

8:51 PM BST

Birdie for Bryson

The defending champion stops the run of three straight bogeys with a birdie on the 17th (his eighth hole of the round) and gets to five over, giving him some breathing space to the projected cut.

Meanwhile Scheffler is still on the range! Bryson would be proud of the number of balls he is hitting on the range.

08:50 PM BST

The thoughts of Viktor Hovland, who finished on one under

Yesterday was the best round I have had in a long time, was not quite as good today but still hit a lot of nice shots and was able to score better today.

“I didn’t three-putt four times, I only had one which helps. It feels doable if you are playing really well. Sam Burns shot five under and it feels doable if you get things going. You get US Open’d sometimes.”

8:42 PM BST

New outright leader

We have a new leader at the top of the leaderboard on his own. Lawrence has now made back-to-back birdies on the second and the third to go to five under, one clear of Spaun. He teed off around an hour and 20 minutes ago but has only gotten through three holes.

08:41 PM BST

Clouds building

08:38 PM BST

Not quite

McIlroy has a birdie chance at the seventh but it just evades the hole to the right. He remains at eight over and currently outside the projected cut line. You could hear over the mics the frustration in McIlroy’s reaction to that putt.

8:36 PM BST

On the range

Scheffler finished his round about two hours ago but is still on the range and has looked fairly animated. He has not looked himself so far today, but is still only eight shots off the lead.

8:34 PM BST

More frustration for DeChambeau

Three consecutive bogeys for the defending champion and yet another putt that he can't believe isn't dropping. He is now at six over and slipping closer to the projected cut line.

08:26 PM BST

Stunning eagle

What a shot by Belgian Detry! He has found the hole from around 140 yards out and made an eagle on the 14th (his fifth hole of the day), improving to one under. He now joins just five other players under par.

08:25 PM BST

Ridiculous wait

There is often a lot of talk about the pace of play and it is a discussion point once more. Our joint leader Lawrence had to wait over 20 minutes after finishing the 11th hole to tee off on the 12th. The Lawrence group teed off around an hour ago and have only played two holes. There are currently five groups on that 12th hole, with a few still waiting on the tee. They do need to do something about the pace of play because this is getting ridiculous.

8:22 PM BST

Not what you want to see

Stoppage incoming? It has gotten a lot darker out on the course.

8:20 PM BST

Big par save

Those are the putts you have to make if you want to win US Opens. On the eighth, Spaun drains a tricky par putt to remain at four under.

Meanwhile, at the 15th green, DeChambeau’s par putt looked certain but somehow it lipped out. He cannot believe it and falls back to five over.

08:18 PM BST

European watch

A Ryder Cup on American soil is not too far away so how are the Europeans doing? In the top 32, there are seven: Hovland, Perez, MacIntyre, Detry, Hatton, Neergaard-Petersen, and E. Molinari.

08:06 PM BST

Save from McIlroy

He had a tricky little putt to save par on the fifth and he made it to remain at eight over. That is currently outside the projected cut line but he doesn't probably need much more to make the weekend.

As it stands, we have just five players under par: Spaun, Lawrence, Burns, Griffin, and Hovland. Griffin has just made a birdie on the sixth to join Burns in a tie for third on three under.

8:02 PM BST

Spaun loses his outright lead

That is what happens when you hit a poor shot off the tee. He immediately puts himself under pressure and cannot save par, so he drops back to four under. Lawrence is now level with him at the marker.

07:58 PM BST

At the fifth

McIlroy nails his drive and puts himself in a good position, which is essential around this course, but he cannot take advantage. His approach does find the green but he has a long, long birdie putt coming up.

On the 14th, Schauffele will lament his bad luck after hitting the pin and bogeying the hole, dropping to one over. DeChambeau faces a difficult par putt to stay at three over, but it slides past the hole and he drops to four over.

07:54 PM BST

So unlucky

Xander Schauffele, currently in a tie for seventh at even par, plays a great approach shot into the 14th green but he is so unfortunate as the ball hits the pin and spins a long way back.

Back on the second South African Lawrence has made a birdie to move to four under, one shot off Spaun’s lead.

MacIntyre had a poor start to his second round, with back-to-back bogeys to begin, but has chipped in at the 12th to get a birdie and improve to one over.

07:52 PM BST

Scottie Scheffler's thoughts

Mentally this was as tough as I have battled for the whole day. It is challenging out there. I was not getting the ball in the correct spots and paying the price for it. Felt like me getting away with one over today was not all that bad. It could have been a lot worse.

“I am definitely not out of the tournament. With the way I was hitting it, today was easily a day I could have been going home and battled pretty hard to stay in there. I am four over. We will see what the lead is after today.”

At the US Open, I do not think you are ever out of the tournament. Put together two decent days, I may be in 25th or 30th place or something like that after today, and like I said, by no means is that out of the tournament.

07:45 PM BST

Can McIlroy get a shot back?

No, he cannot. His shot out of the bunker was solid and gave him a birdie opportunity from just outside 10 feet, but he cannot take it. He remains at eight over.

His group is having a real shocker so far; Justin Rose is nine over whilst Shane Lowry’s US Open experience this week is going from bad to worse, currently sitting on 14 over.

07:42 PM BST

Spaun extends lead

Our leader does not spurn his opportunity to go two clear as he sinks his birdie putt on the sixth and goes to three under, two shots ahead of Burns and Lawrence.

07:37 PM BST

On the fourth

McIlroy needs to start turning this around, and it is the perfect drive off the fourth tee. However, his second shot ends up in the bunker to the left of the green. This week, though, the players would much rather be in bunkers than the rough. It is a par five, so there is still a chance for McIlroy to get a shot back on this hole.

07:34 PM BST

Stunning from Spaun

We have already seen a hole-in-one today at the par-three sixth from Frenchman Victor Perez, and our current leader is not far off it himself. He will have a decent shot at a birdie, with the opportunity to move two clear at the top of the leaderboard.

07:26 PM BST

Another double for McIlroy

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! McIlroy cannot make his bogey putt and has to settle for a second double bogey in his first three holes. That drops the Northern Irishman back to eight over and, as it stands, he is outside the projected cut line.

07:18 PM BST

McIlroy in trouble, again!

On the par-four third, the Northern Irishman is wayward off the tee and finds one of the bunkers to the right of the fairway. His shot out does not get very far, ending up in the thick rough just ahead of the bunker. His third shot is going to be so hard to control and keep on the bunker, and so it proves as it goes off the back of the green into some more thick rough. At least one more dropped shot is incoming and, with the projected cut line currently sitting at around seven over, this is close to the worst possible start for McIlroy and this is not the course to be playing catch-up.

07:16 PM BST

Jon Rahm speaking during his press conference

I did not play badly, I played quite good golf. I did not make a putt. That was the main difference. I did not see anything go in except for a seven-footer on seven. That's it. That is a very hard thing to deal with when trying to shoot a score out here.

Honestly, I am too annoyed and too mad right now to think about any perspective. Very frustrated. Very few rounds of golf I played in my life where I think I hit good putts and they did not sniff the hole, so it is frustrating.

07:12 PM BST

Spaun back to the top

Our overnight leader has bounced back immediately from a bogey on the third with a birdie on the par-five fourth to return to four under, where he started his round.

07:05 PM BST

Miraculous from Rose

Things are not going to plan for Justin Rose this week. He’s seven-over going down the second and his drive is wayward, finding an unfortunate position underneath a mobility scooter on the cart path. He then plays a miraculous shot off to find the green. However, as is seemingly customary at Oakmont, his efforts are not rewarded as the ball rolls back a good 15-feet away from the flag.

06:57 PM BST

Perfect start for Schauffele

Xander Schauffele had a difficult round on Thursday but he has started Friday perfectly with back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th, his first and second holes of the day.

06:53 PM BST

McIlroy's misery continues

Terrible start for the Masters champion. He chips out of the greenside rough but puts too much on it to leave himself a couple of feet away. Faced with an 18-foot putt for bogey, the five-time major winner cannot convert and he doubles down to six-over par.

What a shocking start!

06:45 PM BST

Burns: Today was about getting back mentally

Sam Burns, speaking to Sky Sports after his five-under 65 today:

Yesterday I played extremely well. It was tough to finish how I did, but it was just about re-framing yesterday coming into today, focusing on the positives.

Today was about getting mentally ready, knowing that my game is in a good spot. Driving the ball well is extremely important around here, and I was able to do that today.

06:39 PM BST

McIlroy in the bunker

Rory McIlroy starts his second round at Oakmont and is playing the tougher front nine first, and he has found the bunker with his opening drive.

The world No. 2 already has some work to do – if he is to salvage par.

06:35 PM BST

JJ Spaun off to a solid start

The American stays at four-under and remains at the top of the leaderboard after an opening par.

06:32 PM BST

Scheffler signs off with 71 after a bogey

The world No. 1 cannot sink that closing putt for par and he finishes with a one-over 71 for his second round.

Meanwhile, his playing partner Collin Morikawa also ends his round of 74 with a bogey – he joins Scheffler at four over for the tournament.

Viktor Hovland signs off a round of 68 with a par finish that has him heading into Saturday’s round at one under.

06:27 PM BST

DeChambeau up and running

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau has resumed his second round, sending his tee shot 295 yards at the par-four 10th. He starts three-over.

06:25 PM BST

Rahm cards 75 with bogey

Those missed birdie chances on the back nine for Jon Rahm have been so costly. A frustrating day ends with the Spaniard’s lengthy par effort sliding past the hole – he drops a shot at the 18th.

He signs off with a five-over 75 – he will be around for the weekend. Meanwhile, his playing partner Jordan Spieth closes with a par to remain five over for the tournament.

06:17 PM BST

McIlroy is on the range

The cameras have just turned to the practice range – where Rory McIlroy is. A four-over 74 from the Masters champion was disappointing – he knows he cannot afford too many slip-ups at four-over. He is not out of contention but he needs to start well to have any chance of competing.

06:13 PM BST

Koepka finishes four-over

The five-time major champion bogeys his final hole of the day and fires a four-over-par 74. The American finishes two-over for the championship following his two-under 68 in the first round. He will be in contention heading into the weekend.

06:09 PM BST

JJ Spaun is underway.

Clubhouse leader JJ Spaun begins his second round at Oakmont. The American sends his opening tee shot down the middle of the fairway – that will settle the nerves.

A solid start from the American.

06:02 PM BST

Rahm misses another birdie opportunity

Another birdie opportunity passes Jon Rahm by – he has had three or four decent chances for birdie over his last four holes. But the Spaniard has failed to convert any of them.

His latest miss is from six feet at the 17th and sees him remain three over for the week.

05:57 PM BST

Scheffler with a timely birdie

Scottie Scheffler sinks his birdie putt at the seventh to move back to three over. He played a stellar approach that leads to him sinking a six-footer for a birdie.

The American is moving back into the safe zone away from that cut line.

05:32 PM BST

Koepka is still in contention.

The five-time major champion finishes the seventh hole with a par save. It keeps him level par for the week, with two holes left to play.

Meanwhile, Sam Burns has just missed the chance to share the lead with JJ Spaun. The American has to settle for a par on the par-three sixth after shaving the left edge from 12 feet.

05:25 PM BST

Still to come today

Here’s a look at some of the notable later starters, including overnight leader JJ Spaun and Masters champion Rory McIlroy.

US unless stated; (a) denotes amateur.

Starting from the first tee

  • 5:52 PM: Tom Kim (KR), JJ Spaun, Taylor Pendrith (Can)
  • 6:03 PM: Ludvig Aberg (Swe), Adam Scott (Aus), Hideki Matsuyama (Jap)
  • 6:25 PM: Shane Lowry (Ire), Justin Rose (Eng), Rory McIlroy (NI)

Starting from the 10th tee

  • 6:03 PM: Harris English, Tommy Fleetwood (Eng), Keegan Bradley
  • 6:14 PM: Xander Schauffele, Jose Luis Ballester (Spa), Bryson DeChambeau
  • 6:25 PM: Matt Fitzpatrick (Eng), Wyndham Clark, Gary Woodland

05:21 PM BST

Another wayward shot from Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler is really struggling off the tee – however, he recovers well. The world No. 1 chips the ball out of the rough and then hits a sublime third shot to seven feet and sinks a testing putt for par to remain at four over.

Meanwhile, his playing partner Viktor Hovland is back to three under, one off the lead. The Norwegian’s short game has been the key to his success so far this week. He knocks another to around eight feet to set up the birdie opportunity. It is an easy tap-in for the Norwegian.

05:12 PM BST

Koepka back level

Brooks Koepka is finally back with a birdie, with this one at the par-three sixth. It was a brilliant tee shot to two feet, taking him back to level.

The five-time major champion has finally stopped the rot – he has had five bogeys over an eight-hole stretch on the back nine today.

Meanwhile, Jon Rahm’s frustration with the greens continues. The Spaniard has now missed five putts from seven feet or closer during his second round.

05:03 PM BST

Birdie for Hovland

The Norwegian makes a birdie on the fourth despite finding the bunker off the tee – he escapes nicely and leaves the approach from 170 yards which he strikes to 10 feet. There's no issue with the putter today – so he rolls it in for a birdie.

04:51 PM BST

Hole-in-one

Remarkable play from Victor Perez! The Frenchman attacks the front flag at the par-three six. From 192 yards out, he sinks the ball for a hole-in-one!

The ball is on a sublime line, takes a nice bounce and then dives into the cup for an ace. That brings Perez to one over for the tournament.

04:42 PM BST

Hatton elevates to the 12th

From 44 yards out and the first cut of rough on the par-five 12th, Tyrell Hatton chips for an eagle three.

The Englishman lets the ball gather on the downward slope towards the hole – it keeps going and then drops.

Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka drops another shot. His fourth bogey in five holes – the American is unraveling here.

04:35 PM BST

Birdie for Rahm

It has been such a difficult round for Jon Rahm so far – the Spaniard is back to three over and had to correct a double-bogey six on the previous hole.

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler is back to five over with another bogey. After his tee shot found the bunker – he could only chip his third to 25 feet for a chance at par – but it did not go in.

04:25 PM BST

Is Wallace making a move?

There is an amazing discrepancy out there with how the two nines are playing relatively. Today, the outward half is playing almost three shots harder, so with the two-tee start it is difficult to know who is in the ascendancy.

None of the top 20 are currently playing the back nine. England’s Matt Wallace is in the group on two-over on the back nine, but he is six behind. In that respect, it is a misleading leaderboard, and if Wallace can pick up a few coming in, he will be in contention come the weekend.

4:18 PM BST

Frustration for Scheffler

Having secured a birdie at the second, the world No. 1 looks to be back in trouble again off the third tee. He fires his tee shot among the church pews in the bunker left – before hitting his club into the turf.

The American exclaims “gosh, dang it,” which is about as animated as Scheffler gets out on the golf course. He is normally so laid back, but the American is left raging after his tee shot.

4:06 PM BST

Double trouble for Hovland

Viktor Hovland is simmering right now. The Norwegian pitches sideways from a fairway bunker, with a double-bogey dropping him back to one under and three behind the lead.

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler stops the rot with a timely birdie at the par-four second, rolling in from 10 feet to get back to four over – the world No. 1 desperately needed that.

3:58 PM BST

Hovland falls apart

Viktor Hovland struggles at the par-four second – his hack out of the rough only goes far enough to reach the fairway bunker.

03:56 PM BST

World No. 1 in serious trouble

Scottie Scheffler misjudges his approach into the first green and comes up way too short, leaving a difficult putt from some distance. His short game has been so poor today.

He hits it a good eight feet but fails to sink the returning effort. That is three bogeys in five holes now for the American, dropping him further back to five over.

As things stand, there are 67 players at four over or better that would make the cut – if the round finished now. That means that Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, and Tony Finau (+5) would all miss the cut right now.

03:50 PM BST

Scheffler in danger of missing cut

With eight holes left in his second round, Scottie Scheffler is at five-over and in danger of missing the cut. It would be a huge surprise if the world No. 1 exited these gates prematurely. He has missed a cut in 56 starts and almost three years.

He came here not only on the back of three victories in his last four starts, including last month’s US PGA Championship. He started this tournament as the 11/4 favorite, the lowest price since the days of Tiger Woods in his pomp.

03:33 PM BST

Koepka in trouble

Brooks Koepka is starting to misfire out there. The American follows up a bogey at 18 with another at the first to start his back nine. The 2017 and 2018 US Open champion drops back-to-back one under as a result, now three off the pace.

Meanwhile, it has been a front nine to forget for Jon Rahm. The Spaniard’s latest bogey has him three over for the day.

3:27 PM BST

Hovland could use a big performance.

Luke Donald, the European Ryder Cup captain, will be delighted to see Viktor Hovland performing well at this US Open. The Norwegian had a tough start to the season, missing the cut four times in five starts, and appeared lost amid swing changes. However, he rebounded with a victory in Tampa and has since maintained a consistent performance without truly challenging the leaders.

The world No. 14 could use another strong performance and be just one shot off the lead. After going through his first eight holes in four-under, he is certainly on the right path. His eagle just then on the 17th (he started on the 10th) came courtesy of a chip-in from the back of the green. Hovland has greatly improved in that aspect of the game.

03:15 PM BST

Another bogey for Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler is falling further behind as he walks away with a four-putt bogey. The world No. 1 is really struggling with his short game – he just can’t get anything going.

He misjudges his second putt, running it 12 feet past the hole – that one fails for birdie – and then misses his five-footer for par as well.

So from being on the edge of the green on one, he takes four more shots to get the ball in the hole and cards a five.

03:02 PM BST

Hovland one-off lead

Viktor Hovland is enjoying himself out there – the Norwegian has just drained from off the fringe of the 17th green for an eagle.

He started the hole by bombing his drive 312 yards on the short part but into the rough just off the green. But his sublime chip sends the ball rolling nicely down the slope. It hits the pin before dropping into the hole for an eagle two. Here we go, Hovland is three under and joins Thurston Lawrence in a share of second, just off the lead.

2:56 PM BST

Another misfire from Scheffler

The world No. 1 is struggling off the tee – this one coming on the par-three 16th. He can only chip on from the rough to around 20 feet, only for his putter to save the day – the American remains at three over.

2:49 PM BST

Burns from the charge

Sam Burns is enjoying a solid start to his second round. The American has had two birdies and five pars in his opening seven holes and gets back to level par.

Burns is in the mix and moving in the right direction.

2:46 PM BST

Koepka chips in for birdie

The American is now back to three under par, as he chips in for a birdie three at the par-four 17th. Incredible play from Koepka, as he looked in real trouble as his tee shot found a difficult lie in the rough.

But a sublime second shot which left him hovering on the fringe of the green, and he chips from there for birdie.

02:39 PM BST

Scheffler's bogey

His tee shot at the 15th has found the long grass – this type of shot would strike fear into most players – but Scheffler picks it off the surface brilliantly. The ball runs off the side of the green.

But a heavy-handed chip and two putts on the 15th mean the world No. 1 drops his first shot of the day and he is back to three-over par.

2:31 PM BST

Scheffler in trouble off 15th tee

The world No. 1's footwork is all over the place – he gets into a right mess off the tee, almost falling over as he sends his tee shot into the bunker on the left.

2:28 PM BST

Hatton birdies the fifth

A brilliant approach from Tyrell Hatton – he puts the ball within three feet – a guaranteed birdie will follow four consecutive pars for the Englishman.

Meanwhile, his playing partner Im Sung-jae cannot get up and down from the greenside bunker and he drops back to level par.

02:20 PM BST

Koepka's bogey

Brooks Koepka fails to make his 20-foot par save on the 15th, falling back to two under again, where he started the day – so he is now two off the lead.

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth is struggling. The 2015 US Open champion has played five holes, and no fairways have been hit off the tee yet by the American.

2:12 PM BST

Green is becoming increasingly terrifying.

The predicted thunderstorms coming in this afternoon and then through the weekend would play havoc with the schedule, and there are whispers of a Monday finish. But the pros would welcome the moisture, as these greens are getting increasingly terrifying. This morning we have already seen a five-putt from PGA Tour winner Joe Highsmith from 40 feet and a four-putt from 22 feet by two-time major champion Justin Thomas.

02:11 PM BST

Koepka in trouble

Brooks Koepka’s ball is straight into the rough. He is allowed to play out of there but he would be better off taking a penalty drop. The American approaches the ball and surveys the rough. Koepka decides to play the ball in the rough – brave man – the American gives the ball a huge thwack and it scuttles down the fairway.

It is still short of the green, but a delicate wedge from Koepka leaves him with 20 feet or so to save par.

01:58 PM BST

Wayward shot from Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler’s second shot on the par-five 12th is poor – he finds his ball in the right rough, leaving him with a tricky lie.

But, the world No. 1 judges his chip onto the green well and from roughly 40 feet with the putter, he successfully gets down in two for the par save.

Meanwhile, his playing partner Viktor Hovland continues his solid start. He birdies the hole – his second in three holes – and the Norwegian moves into the red at one under.

01:48 PM BST

Hovland makes solid start

Scottie Scheffler isn't the only player to have made a tidy start. Viktor Hovland has birdied the 10th and has just made par at 11. That is brilliant work from the Norwegian, who is now even par and into the top 10.

01:44 PM BST

Spieth is stuttering.

Jordan Spieth is heading in the wrong direction. He has just carded a second consecutive bogey and he is back to two over.

Meanwhile, it’s been a solid start by Tyrrell Hatton. The Englishman has carded three straight pars, finding all three fairways off the tee and all three greens in regulation.

01:40 PM BST

Disaster for Justin Thomas

Anyone who doesn’t like putting from short range should look away now.

Justin Thomas has carded a double-bogey at the par-five 12th. Some ugly stuff around the hole, with a four-putt on the green, with three of those coming from inside three feet. What seemed a certain par – suddenly became a double-bogey seven.

A real lapse of concentration which could cost the American dearly – this could damage his chances of making it through to the weekend.

01:31 PM BST

Rahm finds the wrong fairway

The Spaniard has driven off the third tree into the wrong fairway. He is so far left that he eludes the church pews bunker altogether and rolls along the fourth fairway.

Let's hope he can scramble for a par save or maybe go better from there?

01:28 PM BST

Koepka is gaining momentum

Brooks Koepka is on the charge. It was an easy birdie on the par-five 12th – the eagle putt had a lot of break but he does a good job of judging that.

The American is now one behind the leader JJ Spaun.

01:18 PM BST

Brilliant save from Scheffler

The world No. 1 gets into trouble off the tee, finding the rough and a difficult lie. Scheffler impressively chips it out and then gets up and down in two from 127 yards out, knocking a terrific approach to just a couple of feet.

His scramble for a par save is almost as important as his birdie at the 11th to begin his second round.

01:13 PM BST

Spieth loses a stroke

The 2015 US Open champion faces a tough situation from the second tee. It's a difficult lie as his second shot moves forward about four yards. However, he recovers well to reach the green with his third shot, but it will result in a dropped stroke for the American.

01:08 PM BST

Perfect start for Scheffler

A brilliant start for the world No. 1 as he begins day two with a birdie, rolling in a 20-footer on the 10th. That is the perfect response from Scheffler, who is looking to rectify a frustrating opening round of 73.

Meanwhile, Viktor Hovland opens his second round with a birdie to move back to level par – he drains his putt from the fringe of the green.

Ominous start from both players.

01:04 PM BST

England's Matt Wallace in action

Matt Wallace began his second round flirting with the cut line – at two over par. But he has given himself a bit more of a cushion by birdieing the par-four second to move to one over.

01:02 PM BST

Tricky start for Rahm

Jon Rahm finds the greenside rough in two and his third shot is some distance from the cup. So, it will be a bogey start for the Spaniard.

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson recover to some extent from their wayward tee shots, giving themselves an opportunity at par putts. But Spieth is the only man to walk off the first hole with a four.

12:56 PM BST

Birdie for Koepka

The 2017 and 2018 US Open champion makes amends for his opening bogey on the 10th with a birdie on the par-four 11th. Koepka is back to where he started his second round – on two under.

12:51 PM BST

Scheffler up and running on day two

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has started his second round at Oakmont with a sublime tee shot, finding the middle of the fairway. A solid start for the American as he looks to rectify a frustrating opening round of 73.

Meanwhile, his playing partner Collin Morikawa finds the fairway, while Viktor Hovland starts his second round at one over, drifts his tee shot slightly into the first cut to the right.

12:41 PM BST

Speith, Johnson, and Rahm are under way.

Former US Open champions Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, and Jon Rahm have begun their second round at Oakmont.

Dustin Johnson – struggled in his opening round, finishing five over. Spieth is level par to start today, while Rahm starts his second round one under.

Johnson is off the first tee and finds the fairway bunker. Meanwhile, Spieth and Johnson find themselves in the rough to the left.

12:35 PM BST

McIlroy struggles

It started so well for Rory McIlroy but he had a horror back nine including a double bogey at Oakmont.

The Masters champion briefly shared the lead after two birdies in his first three holes, when he reached the turn in 33. He dropped six shots in an eight-hole stretch leaving him signing for a four-over 74 and eight strokes behind clubhouse leader JJ Spaun.

The Northern Irishman chose not to speak to the media after his opening round; he needs to improve today to have a chance of making it through to the weekend.

12:20 PM BST

Some big names are getting under way shortly.

Starting from hole one (all times BST)

12:29: Dustin Johnson (US), Jon Rahm (Spain), Jordan Spieth (US)

12:40: Tyrrell Hatton (Eng), Sung-Jae Im (Kor), Sepp Straka (Aut)

All tee times for Friday

12:13 PM BST

The early starters are out

The first tee times are out at Oakmont – Will Chandler has opened his second round with a double-bogey six at par-four first to drop back to 10 over.

Meanwhile, his playing partner Andrea Pavan also opened his second round with a bogey and is now 13 over. No one on the course has yet to find a birdie among the starters at hole one or 10 – which serves as further demonstration of the difficulties Oakmont presents.

12:09 PM BST

Second round hole locations

12:05 PM BST

Frustration for DeChambeau

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau believes a cold putter prevented him from being closer to the lead after a difficult opening round.

The American had a mixed round with two birdies and five bogeys in a three-over 73, leaving him seven strokes behind clubhouse leader JJ Spaun.

Just didn’t get anything out of it," DeChambeau said. "I kept it one under through eight, perfect drive on nine. This golf course can come up and get you pretty quick and you’ve just got to be on your game, and it got me.

“I wasn’t fully on my game. Pretty disappointed with how I played. It’s not too far off. Just got to get the putting a little bit more dialed in and I’ll be right there because three over could have easily been two under today.”

11:55 AM BST

Weather forecast

The first round was played under sunny skies and no rain at Oakmont. However, the players might not be as lucky for the second round.

The weather forecast calls for a higher chance of rain, especially between 12pm and 5pm (local time). The forecast for the day is a high of 27C and a low of 18C, with a 48 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms.

11:49 AM BST

Who could be struggling to make the cut?

The top 60 and ties after today’s second round will make it through to the weekend.

Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick, Phil Mickelson, and 2023 champion Collin Morikawa are all currently at four over and sitting in tied-62nd place.

Justin Thomas (+6), Jason Day (+6), Justin Rose (+7), Sepp Straka (+8), and Shane Lowry (+9) are among the others who need a strong performance in the second round to avoid an early exit at Oakmont.

11:43 AM BST

Second round tee times

Who do you want to follow at Oakmont today? If you want to see whether Scottie Scheffler can improve on his opening round performance, you need to know he is out among the earlier starters alongside Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa.

If you want to watch Rory McIlroy, he begins his second round at 6:25 PM BST.

Scheffler and McIlroy struggle in brutal opening round

Good morning and welcome to Telegraph Sport's live coverage of the second round of the US Open from Oakmont.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy – the world’s top two players – found Oakmont a bruising challenge During their opening round, when only 10 of the 156 players ended under par.

Masters champion McIlroy started well and was two under after nine holes, but then unraveled with four bogeys and a double bogey as he posted a four-over 74.

He was simply beaten up by an unforgiving golf course which punishes you when you miss the fairway, which the Northern Irishman did plenty of times, and even sometimes when you hit the fairway.

"All you've been hearing is how hard this place is, and it's hard to not hear the noise and see what's on social media," McIlroy said.

You're just kind of hearing how hard this course is.

“I was actually pretty nervous. But I actually tried to harness that, the nerves, the anxiety, because it kind of heightens my focus, makes me swing better, I guess.”

He continued: “I just tried to kind of take what the course gave me. I hit a lot of good shots and tried to capitalize on any birdie opportunities, which aren’t very many out here.”

Meanwhile, Scheffler, who entered the third major of the year as the overwhelming favorite following his victory in three out of his past four tournaments, is three over par after a surprisingly ragged performance that included five bogeys.

"I made some silly mistakes and I just need to be a little sharper," said the American who won last month’s US PGA Championship to add to his two Masters victories.

Out in front on four under is American JJ Spaun, who McIlroy beat in a play-off to win The Players Championship in March. The American played superbly – four birdies in his opening eight holes and he was the only bogey-free round despite the benign conditions.

South Africa's Thriston Lawrence is one behind Spaun on the notoriously difficult Pennsylvania course, which is hosting a record-extending 10th US Open.

Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka, the 2017 and 2018 US Open Champion, is alongside Im and Kim Si-woo at two under after birdieing his final holes to post a 68.

With a dry weather forecasted for today, this behemoth golf course will only get tougher.
