UNION, Ky. (WXIX) - The man who was shot during a SWAT standoff in Northern Kentucky’s Triple Crown neighborhood has been identified by the Kentucky State Police.
Mhammed Jibrini, 47, is in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, according to KSP.
"Multiple officers discharged their agency-issued firearms, striking Mr. Jibrini and causing life-threatening injuries," a news release from state police said.
It all started around 1 p.m. Thursday.
Deputies were called to conduct a "wellness check" at a home on Saunders Lane near Hillsboro Road, according to a news release from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.
The call was upgraded to "shots fired" run after dispatchers received reports that a resident in the home was shooting at a landscaping crew and their equipment, Maj. Philip Ridgell said.
Law enforcement focused on a home that residents described as in disarray, with grass standing a foot high.
The deputies exchanged fire with the suspect, causing him to retreat and barricade himself in his home, according to the sheriff’s office.
This prompted authorities to issue a "shelter-in-place" order instructing residents to stay inside for their safety, and an hours-long standoff with deputies and a SWAT team.
"He retreated, then barricaded himself for two to three hours, ultimately surrendering when they deployed gas canisters," Major Ridgell said.
Suspect shot in chest
No law enforcement officials were hurt, and no injuries were reported among neighborhood landscapers, residents, and bystanders, according to sheriff’s officials in a news release.
After hours of failed negotiation attempts, the SWAT Team deployed gas canisters into the residence.
This prompted a reaction from the suspect, who ultimately surrendered to the SWAT Team," the news release states. "Upon taking him into custody, deputies discovered that the suspect had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team investigate.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted shortly after 6:30 p.m.
Deputies have been called to the suspect’s home before for issues with him and community members, according to Maj. Ridgell.
Crime doesn’t usually happen here
Triple Crown Country Club employee and resident Carter Davidson said it’s rare for this sort of incident to occur there.
Homes in Triple Crown generally range in price from $240,000 up to over $2 million.
"Crime doesn’t usually happen here, maybe in the summer you’ll have some kids being kids, but this is super scary," said Carter Davidson, an employee at Triple Crown Country Club who also lives in the neighborhood.
You know, kids are out riding their bikes to the pool, they’re on the golf course. (This was) Super scary for sure.
Rhonda Taylor and her two teenage sons live just a few streets away from the standoff.
“She definitely didn’t expect it in this neighborhood. Never in a million years,” she said.
One of her sons works at the country club, she said, and the other was heading there when shots rang out.
So he was actually on his way up there, and the firemen barricaded the area and told him to go back home and barricade," Taylor said. "So, when he called me back, he said, 'There's an active shooter.'
Emotions were high for residents like Taylor as the ordeal unfolded.
"The first thing I told my son was, 'Go into the house, lock every door. Back door, garage door, every door, everything, just stay safe,'" she recalled.
I called my other son and said make sure you're not going to work.
