These 5 Minutes in 'High Potential' Season 1 Prove That Morgan Is the Ultimate Crime Solver

From the very beginning of High Potential It's been clear why the LAPD Major Crimes Unit hired Morgan Gillory Kaitlin Olson ) as a consultant. Due to her High Potential Intellectual Condition, Morgan is able to pick up on and put together details that the detectives often miss. Each episode of High Potential shows Morgan giving a second look at pieces of information that would otherwise be deemed unimportant, in order to get to the core of the case and catch the killer.

One of the best things in an episode of High Potential This is when the Major Crimes Unit hits a wall in the case, but Morgan ultimately saves the day by pinpointing a very specific detail. Due to her condition, the number of documentaries she's watched, and Morgan's fantastic memory, she is always able to save the day. One moment that showcases Morgan's unique crime-solving ability is a 5-minute period that occurs near the end of Season 1, Episode 5, "Croaked."

In 'High Potential's "Croaked," Morgan Doesn't Buy a False Confession

In "Crooked," the Major Crimes Unit investigates the murder of a veterinarian named Dr. Monica Davis ( Rosslyn Luke ). All they know is that Monica was paralyzed by poisoned soap before she was killed, and that Monica's friend, Bethany ( Kathleen Munroe ), was the one who reported her missing. While investigating the case, Morgan and Karadec Daniel Sunjata ) learned that Monica was especially close with Bethany and her son, Gavin ( Cary Christopher ). Not long before Monica was killed, Gavin saw Shane ( Adam Hagenbuch ), Monica's ex-boyfriend from over a decade ago, is yelling at her. Morgan then uses a takeout bag to trace an address where Monica had been spending time. Daphne Javicia Leslie ) and Oz ( Deniz Akdeniz ) investigate an angry man ( Angel Rosario Jr. ) who claims that Monica killed his pet spider. This leads the four of them to figure out that Monica was using her clinic to steal and sell exotic animals.

Morgan finds out that Monica was saving up the money to buy a house, and that she and Bethany had actually been in a relationship. Bethany had been planning to leave her husband, Nathan, Lucas Kavner ), so that she and Monica could move into a big house together with Gavin. After Oz finds a book about poisoned dart frogs in Nathan's things, Nathan confesses to murdering Monica. but it just doesn't feel right to Morgan. While everyone else takes the weekend off, Morgan does some investigating of her own. She notices a few discrepancies in the case, like that the timeline of how long Monica and Bethany knew each other doesn't match up. The next day, Morgan goes to see the convenience store that Shane had robbed many years back, and she realizes that Monica had been with Shane that day.

Morgan Pieces the Details of the Case Together in an Unlikely Way

The five minutes that really showcase Morgan's crime-solving abilities occur 31 minutes into the episode. Morgan confronts Shane to ask him why he protected Monica after she robbed the convenience store with him. It is then that Morgan notices Shane's ears. , and everything clicks for her. Shane and Gavin both have ear dimples in both ears, which are very rare, and Morgan puts it all together. Shane protected Monica from getting arrested because she was pregnant, and then Monica stalked Bethany and pursued a relationship with her in order to get close to the child she gave up for adoption years earlier. When Bethany realized this, she was heartbroken, and she killed Monica. Morgan and Karadec then confront Bethany, and Morgan points out that Bethany intentionally framed Nathan with the book. Bethany then confesses to everything, all because of Morgan.

These five minutes show exactly why Morgan is such an excellent consultant. As she mentions throughout Season 1, Morgan gets this feeling when something isn't quite right. ,particularly with cases. It's like a puzzle that she cannot quite solve, and her brain gets stuck on it until she figures out what really happened. This is what drives Morgan to always figure out what really happened, instead of just settling for the easy option, like Nathan's confession. She also has knowledge of a number of random facts. , because she has this natural curiosity about life and a desire to learn as many facts as possible, and she often watches documentaries at night when she can't sleep. Morgan is able to follow her instincts by focusing on the parts of the case that do not add up, which leads her to Shane before she even knows what she is looking for.

In that moment, while she is talking to Shane, Morgan notices his ear dimples by accident. Any detective with the Major Crimes Unit could have easily missed this, but Morgan notices even the smallest details, and she knows how to interpret them. From there, Morgan's brain is able to connect all of the dots in a way that is unique to her. She uses the specific detail that Monica's father ( Ben Bode ) knew about the robbery to determine that Monica was there at the convenience store that day. She is able to connect Shane's ear dimples with Gavin's, which is how she realizes that Gavin is Shane and Monica's son. Ultimately, Morgan also gets Bethany talking, in a way that brings the confession out of her. "Croaked" is an especially great episode of High Potential for Morgan, because it shows her pursuing answers even when the case has technically already been solved.
