Opponents of President Donald Trump's administration on Saturday rallied in nearly 2,000 locations across the country , with thousands demonstrating in Northern California.
The "No Kings" protests The demonstrations were originally planned to counter Trump's plans for a military parade in Washington to mark the Army's 250th anniversary. The parade also coincides with the president's birthday. Also driving the demonstrations is opposition to recent immigration raids and the deployment of the National Guard and Marines in Los Angeles.

3:47 p.m. The Sacramento police say that normal traffic has resumed downtown.

2:31 p.m.: The group has left the bridge. Sacramento police estimate a couple hundred people are involved.
2:05 p.m.: A group of demonstrators have marched on the Tower Bridge. There does not appear to be a big traffic backup.
1:55 p.m.: Groups of demonstrators are continuing to march on streets in Sacramento. A large group is near the Tower Bridge on Capitol Mall.
1:38 p.m.: Governor Gavin Newsom shared a photo of a meeting with his team at Cal OES.
"To those protesting today: don’t match their chaos — rise above it," he wrote on X. "Speak out, peacefully."
1:31 p.m.: A group of demonstrators are marching down K Street in Sacramento. LiveCopter 3 is overhead.
12:38 p.m.: Protesters are now marching down J Street in Sacramento.
12:20 p.m.: The Sacramento police are warning of traffic impacts at 10th Street and L Street.

10:09 a.m.: The CHP spokesman Lt. Matt Gutierrez released the following statement to KCRA 3 when asked about any new security efforts in response to the Minnesota shootings: While the CHP cannot comment on the tragic events in Minnesota, I can tell you that the CHP is definitely prepared. As Deputy Commissioner Beauchamp stated in yesterday’s press conference, we have activated all 8 of our Special Response Teams that are all highly trained for days like today. We have ramped up staffing across the state and, in anticipation of supporting everyone’s First Amendment rights, the CHP continues to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security to everyone in California.

9:05 a.m.: Governor Gavin Newsom has called the shootings of two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses in Minnesota 'appalling' and appealed for 'peace in our politics.'
KCRA 3 asked his office if there will be any security changes for today's protests. His office referred to an earlier announcement that 700 California Highway Patrol special response team officers have been pre-deployed to protect the public's safety.
8:22 a.m.: Governor Gavin Newsom has called for protesters to remain peaceful today , saying "don't give Trump what he wants."
"You can be angry—I am," he wrote on X. "But be stubbornly peaceful. That’s how real change happens."
7:39 a.m. Some law enforcement groups have released statements in advance of the rallies.
Sacramento police : "The Sacramento Police Department supports and protects the First Amendment right to free speech. During demonstrations, our role is to ensure public safety while safeguarding the rights of individuals to peacefully assemble and lawfully express their views. We are also committed to protecting first responders, community stakeholders, and members of the public. The protection of life and property remains a core responsibility, and we will take appropriate action to address unlawful behavior and hold those who break the law accountable."
Placer County Sheriff Wayne Woo : "In anticipation of upcoming demonstrations in Placer County and across the country, I reaffirm the commitment of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office to protecting the rights and safety of all members of our community. Peaceful protest is a fundamental right enshrined in our Constitution, and we are committed to safeguarding the First Amendment. We stand in support of individuals exercising their freedoms of speech and assembly in a lawful and respectful manner. However, there is zero tolerance for violence. Any acts that threaten public safety or property will be met with consequences. Our priority is to maintain peace and order, and any actions that compromise the well-being of our residents will be dealt with swiftly. We are committed to serving our community with integrity, respect and professionalism."
In San Francisco, police have a mobile command center and many cars parked around Union Square, which is far from the route protesters said they plan to take.

7 a.m. : California Governor Newsom said he had ordered the pre-deployment of 700 California Highway Patrol special response team officers to protect public safety during the demonstrations.
In the United States, the office of citizen is the most important office we can hold. We respect and protect those who exercise their First Amendment rights when they do so peacefully and respectfully," Newsom said in a statement. "California has zero tolerance for those who plan to take advantage of peaceful demonstrations with violence. We’re pre-deploying resources to maintain safety – and we will prosecute those who break the law.
