
Heather Gibbs, co-owner of Joe Gibbs Racing and the mother of NASCAR Cup Series Driver Ty Gibbs has admitted that her son has "so much to learn" after lashing out at his team during the FireKeepers Casino 400.
Gibbs has yet to win a race in the Cup Series. but finished third for the second time this season at Michigan, as teammate Denny Hamlin claimed victory Gibbs was eager to push for the win but was advised by his No. 54 team to conserve fuel and guarantee a top-five finish.
The 22-year-old was left frustrated and let his team know over the radio. , saying during his post-race interview that he still believed victory was possible. Heather Gibbs later explained her emotions as the race came to an end, but ultimately sided with the team's strategy.

I think Denny, obviously being the veteran, knows how to capitalize on saving fuel the most," Heather Gibbs said. "I think for Ty, just having a run up there, they were kind of in the front and then they were in the back, then they were back and forth all day.
So, it was a long day but just to have them up there was exciting and I think left him a little bitter. Because you can see them, and you have to back off. Just great to have them finish, that was thrilling.

I was like, 'Come on, don’t let the No. 24 win.’ So I was like, ‘Let’s go!’ They were explaining to Ty as the 24 ran out, ‘That’s why you’ve got to back off.’
There's so much to learn, I mean, it's so hard. Sundays are hard. It's really hard, really hard to learn. So much to take in, and all of the veterans have so much experience.
"Every race you get a little bit more knowledge and understanding, and try to capitalize on it. Hopefully the momentum moving forward, it was a great day."
Ty Gibbs was running third with just two laps to go, but was given strict instructions by his team to conserve the fuel and coast to an impressive finish. "We need a top five here bud. We need to make sure we have enough fuel to get to the end, keep saving," Gibbs was told over the team radio.

Gibbs responded in frustration: "Really risk it and try to go win when it doesn't f------ matter if it's a top five." His team fired back, adding: "It does if those guys push each other hard enough to run themselves outta gas. Stick to what we're doing, two to go."
The team celebrated as Gibbs crossed the line in third, but then consoled the young driver as he was so close to ending his Cup Series drought. "I know that's hard man, really good job," the team told Gibbs.
We didn't give them nothing today. We had a great day. We did what we needed to do. We got a top five. Our other car [Hamlin] won. It's about the big picture. All right. Take this and build.
Gibbs had cooled off after the race, but said to reporters: "Yeah, it's just unfortunate because I feel like we had the capability to go do it. I feel like we showed we were fast enough to go do it. It's definitely frustrating, but it's just part of it sometimes."
