We've been monitoring the projected cutoff line at the U.S. Open to see who made the cut and who missed it Oakmont Country Club .
There were a lot of stars who need a good second round to play the weekend. Masters champion Rory McIlroy entered the day at 4 over par and did just enough to make the cut, while Justin Thomas, Justin Rose, Wyndham Clark, and Ludvig Ã…berg weren't so lucky. Scottie Scheffler avoided a bad day and stayed alive, but the biggest name to fall was reigning U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, who shot a 7-over 77 on Friday.

Shane Lowry and Min Woo Lee also missed out, while Justin Hastings was the only amateur to make the cut, which was officially announced on Saturday morning. The play was suspended due to weather. Friday.

Did Rory McIlroy miss the cut at the US Open?
Rory McIlroy, the Masters champion, enters the second round at 4 over par, right on the projected cut line. He didn't have a strong start, recording a double-bogey 6 on both the first and third holes. He made a crucial birdie putt on hole No. 9, but a bogey on No. 11 and a missed par putt on No. 14 put him in jeopardy. McIlroy managed to sink birdies on the 15th and 18th, finishing the day with a 2-over 72 and at 6 over for the tournament, right on the current cut line.
Yes, Bryson DeChambeau made the cut at the US Open.
In all likelihood, no. Reigning U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau enters the second round at 3 over par, just above the projected cut line. Starting on the 10th hole, DeChambeau made three straight bogeys on Nos. 14-16 but birdied the 17th. He started with a bogey-birdie-bogey sequence before hitting into a bunker and double-bogeying the fifth, then following with bogeys on the next two holes as well. DeChambeau finished the day with a 7-over 77 and is 10 over for the tournament.
The cut at the US Open is determined after 36 holes of play. The top 60 professionals and ties, including those tied for 60th place, advance to complete the final two rounds. Scores from the first two rounds are combined, and all players who have completed these rounds can continue in the tournament. Players who do not make the cut are eliminated from further competition.

The cut line for most PGA Tour events is 65. The Masters cut line is 50, but the field at Augusta National is nearly half that of the U.S. Open. At the other two majors, the PGA Championship and British Open, the cut line is 70.
Did Phil Mickelson make the cut at the US Open?
Phil Mickelson of LIV Golf has never won the U.S. Open, finishing as runner-up six times throughout his illustrious career. He entered the second round at 4 over par, aligning closely with the projected cut line for much of the day. Lefty secured a birdie on the fourth hole but followed with consecutive bogeys on the front nine. A birdie on the par-4 11th seemed to secure his position. However, a disastrous pair of double bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes resulted in a 4-over 74 for the day, leaving him at 8 over for the tournament, outside the cut line.
Will Will Zylstra miss the cut at the US Open?
Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, had a 4-over 74 in his first round. He performed better in Round 2, but his two birdies on his first nine (he started on No. 10) were offset by five bogeys. Clark recorded four bogeys over his back nine, including two on Nos. 16 and 18 around a birdie, to finish his day with a 4-over 74. He is 8 over for the tournament.

One of the favorites to win the U.S. Open, Jon Rahm struggled in the second round, shooting a 5-over 75 after Thursday's 69. The LIV Golf star had three bogeys on the front nine and double-bogeyed the par-4 11th, rebounded with a birdie on the 12th and bogeyed the 18th. At 4 over for the tournament, he likely will make the cut.
Did Scottie Scheffler miss the cut at the US Open?
Scottie Scheffler is No. 1 in the World Golf Rankings, took the PGA Championship in May, and has won three of his last four tournaments overall. Yet he has faced trouble at Oakmont, finishing the first round 2 over par and was 5 over through 12 holes in the second round.
He started his round with a birdie but hit a tough stretch starting on the 15th (he started on the back 9) with bogeys on every other hole through the third. However, birdies on Nos. 2 and 4 and another on No. 7 helped him finish at 1 over for the day and 3 over through two rounds, which should be safe.
The top 64 ranked players in each singles draw, and the top 32 ranked teams in each doubles draw, automatically qualify for the main draw of the US Open. Any remaining spots are filled through qualifying tournaments. In total, the US Open tennis tournament has 128 players in each singles event and 64 teams in each doubles event for the main draw.
Of the 156 golfers who entered the tournament, 60 are guaranteed to make the cut and play this weekend. That number can grow to account for ties, and players within 10 strokes of the lead also get to play the weekend. Last year, 74 players made the cut at 5 over par.
